Worker Killed in Congress Crane Rollover Accident
A 28-year-old man was killed in a construction accident involving a large crane. According to a news report in The Daily Courier, the fatal crane accident in Arizona occurred on state land near Jake’s Granite Supplies Quarry in Congress. The worker was operating a 100-ton crane on a hillside when it flipped over. Emergency personnel spent over six hours trying to recover the worker's body from underneath the overturned crane. It is not clear at this time why the crane flipped over or if the construction worker had proper training to operate the 100-ton crane.
Cranes have the potential to do great damage when they are defective, improperly loaded, on unsafe ground or operated by an inexperienced worker. According to The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were 72 occupational crane-related fatalities in the year 2006. The average number of workers killed in crane accidents between the years 2003 and 2005 was 78.
When someone is killed in an Arizona construction accident, the victim's family may file a workers compensation claim through the worker's employer. Damages that may be covered include medical bills, funeral expenses and lost future wages. It is common, unfortunately, for claims to be denied and for families to struggle to get the support they need in their time of crisis.
